Today, most of the advice given by the fitness industry sucks!
This is especially true when it comes to anything that is diet related.
Don’t eat fat!
Don’t eat carbs!
Drink 2 protein shakes a day!
Eat lots of fruit and vegetables!
Blah blah blah.
It’s all just a never-ending babbling brook of bullshit. And remember, all of this is coming from me, a certified “fitness professional”.
During my time in the fitness industry, I have helped many a client achieve their desired fitness results as a personal trainer.
I’m not just some random Johnny know it all typing away on a bodybuilding.com forum.
The one piece of diet advice that I still can’t wrap my head around is the whole drink a gallon of water a day nonsense.
Where It All Started
Most of the time, I like to start out my articles with a little background information on whatever subject I am writing about.
I believe that it’s important to know the origins of a topic so that you can get a better understanding of the big picture and understand why certain things become popular in the world.
However, with this topic, I had trouble finding any solid information on who started the gallon of water a day movement and more importantly, why you should drink that much water in the first place.
Regardless, after searching through many articles on the topic, I did notice two benefits that were mentioned over and over again.
Supposedly, if you spend half of your day forcing large gulps of water into your belly, you will magically get rid of any wrinkles or other signs of aging that your body shows.
It turns out that the fountain of youth has been staring you right in the face this whole time…
Show me one person that consistently drank a gallon of water a day and miraculously looked 10 years younger and I’ll give you a million bucks.
Another supposed side effect of drinking a gallon of water a day is extreme weight loss benefits.
Apparently doing the simple math of calories in vs. calories out isn’t an easy enough way to lose fat.
According to healthcare and fitness professionals, you need to carry around a gallon jug of good ol’ H20 at all times if you want to finally lose weight and get into shape.
I guess having a belly full of water would make you less hungry, but so would effective meal planning…Duh
The Truth About Drinking A Gallon Of Water A Day
Want to know what drinking a gallon of water a day really does for you? It makes you feel like your bladder is going to explode 24/7.
Every 30 minutes, you will be running to the bathroom and pissing like a goddamn racehorse!
Anyone who hears that monstrous stream coming out of your pp will probably think you have motherfuckin Sea Biscuit in the bathroom with you.
All jokes aside, I am being serious. I never wasted so much time going to the bathroom in my life when I attempted to follow this retarded advice some years ago.
Loss Of Sodium, Vitamins, And Minerals
Not only will you be stuck in the bathroom pissing your life away, but you will also be constantly flushing everything out of your body!
Yes, you will be getting rid of toxins and waste, but you will also be getting rid of sodium, vitamins, and minerals.
This is bad for 2 reasons…
1) Sodium is essential for getting good muscle contractions during your workouts.
2) Sodium along with other vitamins and minerals keep your brain and other organs working properly!
One time, I actually got to witness what happens to a person when they drink too much water first hand.
Grab some popcorn and your favorite blanket… It’s time for a story.
Excess Water Consumption At Its Worst
Once upon a time, an ex-girlfriend of mine had a grandmother that was put into a nursing home.
When I first met her she was very polite and easy to be around. She would talk to me about her childhood and tell me all kinds of interesting stories from back in the day.
However, as time went on, she started acting a little different… a little weird.
She began talking to people that weren’t there and even turning violent against some of the nursing home staff and her roommates.
We immediately thought that she was getting dementia or some other ailment that often plagues old people, so psychological testing was done.
Long story short, all of the tests to see if she was crazy came back negative and everyone was baffled.
That was until we discovered the real issue in the corner of her room behind her mattress. Turns out she had been hoarding water bottles and drinking them night and day non-stop.
As a result, she was extremely low on sodium and other vitamins which was causing her to literally lose her mind!
Once the stash of water bottles was found and disposed of, she went back to drinking a normal amount of water and returned to her old polite self.
Is this case of drinking too much water a little extreme? Yeah.
But it does prove that too much of anything is a bad idea.
The Only Time Drinking A Gallon Of Water A Day Is Beneficial
Now, I will admit that there are some circumstances where drinking a gallon of water a day can be beneficial or downright necessary.
For example, if you live in the desert as I do and work outside or do other physical activities outdoors, you absolutely should be drinking lots and lots of water.
I still remember going through football practices in high school in the 115-degree heat. I was probably drinking over a gallon of water a day at that point and it still didn’t feel like enough!
How Much Water Should You Be Drinking?
For most people, simply drinking water whenever you are thirsty should be enough to keep you energized and healthy.
On top of that, you should ONLY be drinking water most of the time anyway.
In fact, if most people ditched the sugary sodas they drink every day and only consumed water, they would be amazed at how much weight they lost!
For those of you that still need more social proof to be convinced, watch the cinematic masterpiece called Pumping Iron.
You will see Arnold Schwarzenegger and the other legendary bodybuilders in the film completing extremely hard workouts with no gallon jugs of water in sight.
The original Gold’s Gym had only one drinking fountain and they drank from it only when they were thirsty… Because they had common sense.
Water… The Best Choice
As long as humans are made of 60% water, it will always be the best drink of choice on the planet. But, like anything else in the world, too much of it will be bad for you.
Like I always say… Listen to your body and consume everything in moderation.
