Steroids and bodybuilding have gone together since the 1950s, and any bodybuilder that claims to have been natural from that point on is probably full of shit.
And even though everyone knows that steroids exist, nobody knows much about them.
Honestly, having never used them myself, I didn’t really know much either until I spent some hours doing research while writing this article.
So, with that being said, let’s talk about what steroids are and how they work.
What Are Steroids?
Steroids are synthetic derivatives of the male sex hormone testosterone and they were first created by scientists in the 1930s.
Once the first steroids were created, they were tested on lab animals who gained significant amounts of muscle mass in a short period of time.
Not long after that, steroids were manufactured on a large scale and used to help raise agricultural livestock and treat debilitating diseases found in humans.
However, once Olympic coaches from the Soviet Union got ahold of them, they gave them to their athletes, and as a result, dominated the Olympic games.
Not long after that, the USA got wind of what was happening and created their own anabolic steroids.
Once this occured, bodybuilding and athletics were changed forever.
How Do Steroids Work?
Steroids do two things really well.
- Greatly increase nitrogen retention in the human body
- Greatly increase protein synthesis in the human body
What does that mean?
It means that steroids turn your body into a muscle building machine.
See, we know that protein builds muscle and that your body’s nitrogen balance is directly connected with how well this occurs.
So, when you take anabolic steroids, your body is able to turn just about every ounce of protein that you eat into rock hard muscle.
This is why pro bodybuilders eat such ultra-high 300g a day protein diets.
Theoretically speaking, the more protein they eat the more muscle they grow.
You see, without the use of anabolic steroids, your body isn’t able to turn nearly as much protein into muscle.
How Are Steroids Made?
All steroids are made from the male sex hormone testosterone.
And believe it or not, synthetic testosterone is actually produced by taking different chemical properties from plants.
Two of the most common plants used in synthetic testosterone production are soybeans and yams.
Pretty crazy, right?
Most Commonly Used Steroids
Testosterone is the primary male hormone that is naturally produced in the testicles.
Test is directly responsible for building muscle, burning fat, and having manly characteristics.
Other benefits of testosterone include:
- Decreased body fat
- Increased libido
- stronger bones
- increased muscle mass
- increased strength
In other words, the more testosterone a guy has, the more jacked tan and shredded he usually is.
Just look at those crazy fuckers in prison.
Those high testosterone psychos are more jacked than most fitness competitors and all they do is pushups and pull-ups all day.
But, taking high doses of additional testosterone also has drawbacks such as:
- enlarged breasts in men
- excess hair growth
- male pattern of baldness
- skin rash
- water retention
Despite all the possible negative side effects, it’s obvious why bodybuilders take the stuff.
When properly dosed, it will get you better muscle building results in half the time.
Good ol Trenny is an anabolic steroid that is five times more powerful than testosterone.
This motherfucker was originally created to beef up cattle and gained popularity with athletes in the 1970s.
Trenbolone is usually taken during a bulking phase but can also be taken on fat loss diets.
It’s kinda known as the middle ground steroid because while it does many things okay, it isn’t the best at anything.
There are drugs that are better at building muscle mass and better at burning fat, but Tren does both at the same time moderately well.
Bodybuilders also like it because it has fewer harmful side effects, such as no water retention.
However, like anything, if you take too much, bad things can happen such as:
- increased sweating
- loss of sex drive
- high blood pressure
- elevated resting heartbeat
Studies have shown that people who take the recommended doses of Trenbolone have the ability to gain 15 pounds of muscle mass within 2 months.
Dbol was the wonder drug that was created by John Ziegler in the 1950s for the US Olympic team.
It helped the USA blow past the USSR and become dominant in every Olympic sport.
Naturally, bodybuilders found out about it and it became the drug of choice during the so-called golden era of bodybuilding.
Back in the day, this stuff was available in drug stores and you could even get it over the counter.
And today, its still readily available in countries like Mexico without a prescription.
Dbol is still one of the most widely used drugs by bodybuilders today and a six-week cycle can result in up to 20 pounds of muscle gain!
It is common to notice results right after taking it and you can gain as much as 5 pounds after the first week.
Side effects include:
- Increased Hair Growth
- Voice Changes
- Increased Libido
- Fluid Retention
- Breast Enlargement (Bitch Tits)
- Liver Damage
It is a weaker grade of steroid but is used by bodybuilders because it has fewer side effects than the other heavy hitters mentioned above.
Deca has to be in your system for about 8 weeks before you’ll see any results and can be taken in 20-26 week cycles.
And even though it causes virtually no visible side effects, it does come with one that can be particularly nasty.
This famous side effect goes by one name… DECA DICK.
When someone has a case of Deca dick, their dick literally stops working.
No amount of seeing or touching thick juicy asses or perfect tits will make your dick get hard again until you stop taking the shit.
If you ask me, this is the worst possible side effect of em all and I wouldn’t wish that on my worst enemy.
Winny, also known as Stanozolol is a steroid that is great for bodybuilders that want to focus on building the most amount of muscle possible while minimizing fat gains.
Yeah no shit Nick, that’s the whole goal of bodybuilding.
I know smartass, but that’s not what I mean.
In other words, Winstrol is a good steroid to take if you don’t want to have an offseason where you gain large amounts of fat.
Some bodybuilders would rather stay within 20 pounds of their contest weight year-round rather than ballooning up and gaining 50 pounds every offseason.
Winstrol works by increasing the production of red blood cells in your body.
More red blood cells mean more oxygen-rich blood is able to be transported around your body.
More oxygen to your muscles means longer and more intense workouts are possible.
Winny works fast and most lifters feel stronger within a couple days of taking their first dose.
However, it typically takes 2-4 weeks to see noticeable results in the mirror.
Winstrol also causes no visual side effects (such as water retention) as long as you stick with the recommended dosage.
Clenbuterol isn’t an actual steroid but it’s on the list because it’s used by just about every physique competitor (and Hollywood actor) who wants to get absolutely shredded.
Clen’s main purpose is to help beef up cattle and traces of it can be found in meat produced in China and Mexico.
However, it is great at burning fat in humans because it greatly increases our production of adrenaline.
When adrenaline production is heightened, our natural body temperature is raised and fat begins to melt off our bodies through a process called thermogenesis.
Clen also does a great job at suppressing appetite and providing bursts of energy that can be used to perform long intense workouts.
Clenbuterol is usually taken in 12-week cycles.
Cycles that last longer than 12 weeks are less effective because the human body builds up a tolerance to it.
You may also experience other negative side effects such as:
- liver damage
- skin damage
Stacking is a term that you might’ve heard from supplement companies or seen on advertisements at bodybuilding.com.
It’s just another of saying that you’re using multiple supplements (or steroids) at the same time.
Almost all bodybuilders use more than one steroid at a time during a cycle to maximize muscle building and fat burning results.
Below is a list of common “stacks” that I could find online.
Again, I’ve never done steroids so these supposed stacks could be a bunch of bullshit for all I know.
Test & Deca – Bulking
Test/Deca/Dbol – cutting
Test/Trembolone/Winstrol – cutting
However, since all steroids affect bodybuilders and athletes in different ways, most competitors do one steroid at a time (often called a lonely cycle) to see how each drug affects their system individually.
If you’ve made it this far into the article, you’ll have a pretty good basic understanding of what steroids are and how they work, but there is still a few things we need to touch on.
The first thing is the female sex hormone, estrogen.
You see, when you take testosterone or any other anabolic steroids, your estrogen levels also get boosted.
This is why some men who take steroids grow bitch tits or develop other female characteristics (both physical or mental).
In order to combat the estrogenic effects of steroids, bodybuilders take estrogen blockers such as Nolvadex to keep everything in check while completing their steroid cycle.
Post Cycle Therapy
Once a steroid cycle is complete, bodybuilders must go through a phase called post cycle therapy (PCT) so their bodies naturally produce hormones again.
Yup, that’s right, when you take steroids, your body recognizes it and shuts down natural hormone production.
That fact alone is enough to scare me away from ever doing a cycle.
These drugs basically trick your brain back into producing hormones again by sending electrical signals to your hormone-producing glands.
Kinda like jump-starting a car that has a dead battery.
Does Using Steroids Make You A Cheater?
I find it funny when the mainstream media demonizes athletes who get caught using steroids.
If you get upset over that I have one question for you.
How fucking dumb are you?
Everyone and I do mean EVERYONE who competes at an elite level in any sport is on some kind of steroid.
It isn’t cheating when everyone is doing it you fucking retards.
Oh my god! So and so got caught with dbol in his system! oh my god, what are we gonna do!
Get the fuck over it.
Do you actually think that head athletic trainers are hired based off of their ability to teach people how to lift weights?
Well, they aren’t.
They are hired based off of how good they are at getting their athletes through drug tests.
True fucking story bro.
Do Steroids Make Everyone Look Great?
You still need top tier genetics to be able to compete in pro bodybuilding competitions!
Steroids can’t change your muscle shape or the structure of your body.
Genetics will always be king.
This means that in a world without steroids, the top bodybuilders of today would still win all the natural bodybuilding competitions.
That’s because they were naturally born with great physiques and great work ethics in the weight room.
Sorry. But it’s true.
They’d still beat your ass any day of the week.
Trust me when I tell you this, there are plenty of average Joe gym rats who take tons of steroids and still look like shit.
Why I’ll Never Use Steroids
Look, I’m a big picture kinda guy who is always looking ahead to the future.
With that being said, it should be obvious why I’ll never do a steroid cycle.
I just can’t fathom the idea of putting a substance in my body that has a good chance of doing permanent damage to my internal organs.
I also HATE the idea of gaining a bunch of muscle mass that was only possible through the use of a drug.
When I earn something in life I prefer to do it the right way and take the longer more honest route.
This is also why I take no supplements or use any type of lifting gear whatsoever.
If I can’t do something in the weight room using regular food and my body, I’m not interested in it.
I’d much rather hit a 405 pound beltless squat than a 500 pound squat with a belt and a squat suit.
But hey, that’s just me.
What I’ve Learned
The number one take away I’ve gotten from doing all this research and being around the fitness industry for most of my life is that BODYBUILDING ISN’T HEALTHY.
It’s actually one of the worst things you can do to your body (especially when drugs are added to the equation) and I don’t really care for it as a sport.
Lifting weights, starving myself, and wearing tiny little posing trunks for a plastic trophy doesn’t do anything for me.
So, I’ll continue lifting naturally, using the main barbell exercises, and enjoying my food.
I’d rather be 5’11 and 240 with a little belly fat than 180, shredded and feeling like shit.
