You may be in need of some fast cash and not know how to get your hands on some of it fast, but I have a solution.
I know I was in that position multiple times when I decided to escape the 9-5 life once and for all and every time I was in need, selling things always helped me pull through.
Many people don’t realize it, but almost everyone has anywhere from $1000 to $5000 worth of stuff just laying around their house that is no longer being used.
Why let it just sit there when you can have a virtual garage sale 24/7 all thanks to that little thing called the internet?
Why I Use Letgo and OfferUp
I prefer to use Letgo and OfferUp to sell my unwanted stuff because they don’t take any of the profits that you make from a sale or have any other hidden fees.
I also love that you don’t have to deal with any shipping logistics like with other online services such as eBay.
If you do decide to use services like eBay or it’s competitors, you will be charged for listing items, charged a percentage when the sale is made, and charged by services like PayPal every time you transfer and withdraw money.
Did I mention that you would also have to deal with all the hassles of shipping?
I don’t know about you but I’ve never shipped anything in my life and I don’t want to anytime soon.
Again, that is just another cost that eats into your profits and who the hell wants to spend all their time dicking around at the post office anyway?
Not this guy.
With Letgo and OfferUp all you have to do is take some photos, write a description, and meet up with someone locally to collect your money and deliver the goods.
Easy peasy, just how I like it.
Listing Your Items Effectively
If you want your stuff to sell FAST, you have to know how to list your items the right way.
Both of the apps have autofill settings that will try and guess what the item is once you upload pictures of your goods.
Most of the time the automated descriptions come out horribly.
I once listed a set of adjustable dumbbells and the auto description came up as a pair of black and grey tools listed in the home goods section.
Like anything else in life, if you want to stand out and get things done, you have to be willing to put in a little more effort than the next guy.
Let’s break everything down so that you know exactly what to do.
Taking great photos is probably the most important part of making a good item description.
I recommend taking AT LEAST 3 photos of whatever you are trying to sell from all different angles.
Make sure the photos are high quality instead of fuzzy, out of focus, and rushed.
The first thing people see when shopping for items on these apps is the pictures, so if yours suck, nobody will view your products.
Writing the Title
Remember how I just told you how badly the auto descriptions suck?
You don’t want to take a picture of an iPhone that you are trying to sell and have the auto description title it as Little Black Camera Box.
Instead, be as descriptive as possible without making the title too long.
I would put Black iPhone 6s Plus 64GB.
That title tells the customer exactly what they are getting so there is no chance of any confusion.
Descriptions that Sell
The description is the meat and potatoes of the whole deal.
Once people see your awesome pictures and great title they will be compelled to click and read more about the item.
Here is where the fun starts. You get to practice the lost art of copywriting and persuade people to buy what your selling with your written words.
Most no-getters will not even bother making a description for their items but we are better than that.
Example of how an average no-getter would write a description –
Used iPhone 6s Plus. works great.
Example of how a moneymaking go-getter would write a description –
⚡Gently used iPhone 6s Plus⚡
Currently in great working condition! Few minor scratches but has never been dropped. 64GB of storage space perfect for anyone who likes to download plenty of apps and music. Looking for $400 but willing to listen to any reasonable offer! Charger and free high-quality phone case included!
The more information you give people the better informed they will be.
When you don’t give a detailed description of the item you end up getting a bunch of messages from people who just want to ask you a million and one questions about the item.
That is a waste of time and time is money!
Only Accept Cash
Some buyers will try and pay with a check or cashiers check which is always going to be more risky for you than just getting cold hard cash.
Personal checks can bounce and cashiers checks are counterfeited all the time.
If someone is offering to pay you with a check then politely decline and let them know that you only accept cash.
Think about it, if they have the money, getting it in cash shouldn’t be difficult.
Always meet up in a crowded public place.
Never ever let someone have your address and show up at your front door.
The last thing you need is some random asshole showing up at your home randomly and demanding that you give them their money back.
Yes, shit like that really does happen and half the people that use these apps are complete weirdos.
Always use caution.
Selling your stuff on Letgo and OfferUp is easy as pie and nothing is stopping you from making some decent money by doing so right now.
By doing this (even if you aren’t in immediate need of money) you will gain valuable sales experience which can lead to you wanting to try other ways of making money such as retail arbitrage.
The number way of making money in the world has always been buying low and selling high so get your experience now and see where it takes you.
